New Zealands South Island

Te Wai Pounamu

“Everything that has occurred in the South Island – from the slippage of its tectonic underworld, to the animal blood spilled on its ground, to the explorers from Polynesia and later from Europe who found this land and the pathways through its high alps and the gold and green in its rivers, to the one way travel by its men to war, the burrowing by rabbits, the remnants of shipwrecks, and the cafe lingering on its streets, to the ‘feasting’ by west coast sandflies and the first flight by a young Royal Albatross or the one by Richard Pearce, to the presence of braided rivers and old growth forests, dark skies and much much more – feeds my curiosity and provides my belonging. The ambition for my images is that they express my respect and love for these landscapes, for providing shelter and beauty, and for holding the memories from our past. “
